Home Euthanasia
Answers to your most common questions about home euthanasia and end of life care

FAQs
What happens during a home euthanasia visit?
Our vet, or vet and nurse team, will visit and ensure that you are happy with the procedure and aftercare decisions. A consent form will need to be signed and then a sedative will be given to your pet so they can become sleepy and relaxed. During this time you can spend some quiet time with them as they become sleepy, this may take around ten minutes.
When you are ready the final injection can be given, at this point your pet will usually be very sleepy, meaning that they can peacefully drift off without stress.
The vet will check your pet has passed and then if you would like you can spend some additional time to say goodbye. We can take any requested keepsakes, such as pawprints or fur clippings.
I am not comfortable with needles or would rather not stay during the euthanasia- is that ok?
Can I stay with my pet?
Yes, our gentle sedation process allows for you to be with your pet for the whole process. You will be able to talk to them and provide comfort as they pass
Please let us know if you are worried about needles, we can easily ensure that you can step out while any needles are used or prepared. If you would rather not stay for the final injection then please let us know and we can accommodate this. You are still free to spend time with your pet before and after they pass if you would like.
What should I prepare beforehand?
We do not need any special preparations but it can be nice for your pet to have their own comfortable bed or a blanket to lie on. You may wish to consider if you would like any music playing, and who you would like to be present (family members and other pets).
Please let us know about any access or parking instructions/restrictions at the time of booking.
Children or pets can find being present during euthanasia helpful with closure and understanding what has happened. It is really up to you to decide whether children are capable of coping with this experience and whether this is right for you. We do ask that children or other pets are kept away if they are likely to be disruptive or cause distress to your pet while they pass.
For help supporting children experiencing pet loss we advise the following website can offer helpful advice Blue Cross Support for Children
Can children or other pets be present?
My pet is nervous of strangers/at the vets, is this ok?
With our gentle sedation we can ensure that, in most cases, pets can drift gently off to sleep without the need for much handling that they may find frightening. If you feel your pet may pose a significant risk to us then please discuss this with us prior to booking, it may be necessary for muzzles or towel wraps to be used briefly to allow for safe sedation, or for us to prescribe an oral sedative that can be given before our arrival.
After your pet has passed you can spend some time with them if desired. We can take fur clippings and pawprints if you would like. If you have selected for us to take your pet for cremation then, when you are ready, we will gently transfer them to our vehicle. If you would rather make your own arrangements then we will leave your pet with you.

Where can I find grief support?
We truly understand that the loss of a beloved companion can feel overwhelming, please rest assured that it is completely normal to grieve the loss of a pet, they are not 'just a dog/cat'. Talking to someone for gentle and non judgemental support can be incredibly helpful. We are happy to offer support but also highly recommend The Blue Cross Pet Loss Support service which is a fantastic source of information and has links to live chat, a facebook group and telephone support.
