End of Life Support

At All Paws At Peace, we understand that making the decision to put a beloved pet to sleep is not easy. Whether your pet has been declining for some time or you are coming to terms with a sudden change in their health it can be useful to be able to have an honest and unhurried conversation with a professional to give you the tools you need to know you are making the right decision.

This can be an opportunity to:

  • Discuss quality of life assessment and how to know when the time has come

  • Ask any questions about medications and therapies which may improve your pet's comfort

  • Find out more about the euthanasia process, ask any questions about what happens and why

  • Plan your home visit euthanasia, discuss any special requests

  • Discuss aftercare options and make memorial keepsakes

Why Choose an at-home Euthanasia?

As veterinary professionals we do everything we can to make visiting the veterinary practice as stress free as possible. Unfortunately for many pets this can still be a stressful experience, which leads many people to choose a home visit when the time comes to say goodbye to their pet. It may be that your pet is nervous or fearful of the vets, or that the car journey is stressful for them. Whatever the reason, a home visit euthanasia can provide a calmer, unrushed and more personal experience. Allowing your pet to feel less stressed and for you to create a peaceful final moment that is best suited to you.

Benefits of At-Home Euthanasia

Deciding between a vet practice or at-home euthanasia is a personal choice and you must do whatever feels right for you and your pet. Some benefits of choosing a home visit euthanasia are:

  • Less stress for pets that are fearful or nervous of vet visits

  • Avoids the need to transport pets that dislike car travel or that may find the journey uncomfortable (due to pain or nausea for example)

  • Allows for an unrushed appointment and more privacy

  • Allows you to make your pets final moments personal to you (playing music, a comfy bed, having favorite foods or toys present for example)

  • Allows other pets to be present if desired

  • Allows family to be present to say goodbye, including children if appropriate

  • Avoids the distress of travelling to and from a vet practice in a state of grief

What To Expect During an At-Home Euthanasia

Our experienced vet will attend your home and ensure that your pet is put to sleep with compassion and care, depending on your needs our veterinary nurse may also attend to assist.

In most cases your pet will be given a gentle sedative to allow them to become sleepy and relaxed before the final medication is given to ease their passing.

You can rest assured that there will be plenty of opportunity to ask any questions both before and during you visit. For those that feel better having more detailed information we have included this and answers to common questions in our FAQ section here...

Keepsake Options

We can offer a range of personalised keepsakes, which can help you to cherish your pet's memory and keep a small part of them with you.

For many people having a small keepsake can help to ease their grief and help to process and find peace with the loss of their companion.

Cremation Services

If you wish to have your pet cremated we can arrange this through our trusted local partners Absent Friends Pet Crematorium in Hertfordshire. Your pet will be respectfully cremated, with options for returning their ashes and choosing from a selection of urns, caskets or a simple scatter tube.

If desired we can securely transport your pet to the crematorium and return their ashes to you.

Alternatively, if you would prefer, you are free to make your own arrangements for cremation or burial. In this case we will leave your pet with you once they have passed.

Fur Keepsakes

A small clipping of fur is taken and presented in a decorative glass vial, a lovely memorial that will last forever.

Pawprint Keepsakes

An ink or plaster paw impression can be made to preserve your pet's unique paw print. We can also take imprints of feathers or noses in smaller pets.
